Project

Versatile, editable cartogram map tool for internal use by AIGA national and chapter leaders. AIGA is the professional association for design, with over 24,000 members across 72 chapters in the United States. In 2015, the organization refreshed its main identity to reflect a more stratified, chapter-centered approach to membership.

During the 2015 AIGA Design Conference, we created this editable, vector-based tool showing all 70 (now 71, soon to be 72) chapters, distorted by membership size and colored with each chapter’s social media identity. It has since been deployed by the national office, initiative chairs, and several local chapters in a multitude of ways.

Usage

Chapter Advisory Council regions (2016), Diversity & Inclusion initiative adoption (2016), Northwest Arkansas chapter rollout (2017), “Start a New Chapter” page (AIGA.org), Tech tool workshop & San Luis Obispo community meeting (AIGA Santa Barbara), “About AIGA” presentation (AIGA Boston), Student presentation (AIGA Cincinnati), Community Meeting (AIGA Orlando), 2017 AIGA Design Conference Handbook (Minneapolis).

Testimonials

“Keir’s cartogram has been an extremely effective tool for me when presenting information about representation in AIGA’s Diversity and Inclusion Initiative within the organizations 72 Chapters nationwide. This graphic quickly allows viewers to see where Task Force members are located and shows the size and location of Chapters that are currently participating in the initiative. It’s flexible enough to both galvanize and clarify the conversations within AIGA on this and other issues among our membership and the public at large.”

Jacinda Walker
Chair, AIGA Diversity & Inclusion Initiative

“I use Keir’s cartogram in student talks to show the size of our AIGA network, and how it can be a support system beyond just the local chapter. It really gives students an idea of what the bigger picture looks like. The first question is always “What is AIGA?” because they really need that context of what AIGA is and then what AIGA Cincinnati is. This tool helps me communicate that.”

Autumn Heisler
Co–President, AIGA Cincinnati
