Last month I attended my fourth UCSB Daily Nexus alumni reunion, and was stoked to be asked by current student staffers to return for the new UC Student Journalism conference.

I figured I’d polish up the ol’ “Design for Storytelling” talk I gave at Cal State Northridge in 2017, and didn’t know what to expect—but if the “about me” slide gets laughs you know the presentation will go well.

This was a first for the Nexus; they hosted student journalists from UCLA and UCSD, learned about how each paper works, and traded tips and ideas for improvement.

I had to follow other alumni/fountains of wisdom like spouses Gretchen Macchiarella (Solutions Journalism and Data-Driven Journalism) and Tony Biasotti (Freelancing 101), as well as writer Ellen O’Connell Whittet (Generating Ideas for Features).

Thanks to the Nexus staff for inviting me to speak!
