Warping young minds again, this time for publication design and data visualization, thanks to Gretchen Macchiarella of Cal State Northridge’s Journalism Department. Talked for a bit about “Design for Storytelling,” and I gotta say that journalism students seem to be much more into this than design students ever have been, at least when I cover it.
The idea is that design choices are story choices, reinforcing page design and visual communication. I outlined best practices for color choices, iconography and layout in ways students could apply directly to both their in-class data visualization projects and their future careers.
Also got to see Starfleet HQ, sort of; the building that stood in for it in the 2009 film is on campus at CSUN. Thanks for the invite, Gretchen!
